Case Study 2
Case Study: Semi-Permanent Remediation System Installation
General Location: City of Denton, Texas
Climatic and Site Conditions: Prairie ecotype, highly
developed urban environment. Active automotive repair shop onsite.
Small lot with dynamic traffic.
Client Type: Small Environmental Consulting Firm
End User Type: Small Fuel Distribution Company
Project Goals: Assist client project manager in pre-project planning. Assist project manager with remediation system
design based on pilot test data and working knowledge of subsurface behavior in the area. Consult with winner of equipment
manufacturing bid award to optimize equipment for onsite demands and decreased maintenance activities. Perform the remediation system
installation and provide initial startup support services.
Project Specification: Form and pour equipment containment slab with a six-inch berm. Receive equipment from
manufacturers. Breakout concrete around five recovery wells and install 2x2 ft traffic rated man ways. Trench from the compound to
each well. Install recovery piping to each well as a home run to the compound and include a 4” PVC contingency conduit. Backfill
and resurface trenching to grade. Determine best layout for equipment placement within the compound and set equipment in place.
Coordinate with equipment enclosure subcontractor to ensure timely completion and correct installation of structure. Coordinate with
electricians to bring in service power in a manner that complies with local code and maintains a safe and efficient work environment.
Coordinate with plumber to bring in Natural Gas in manner that complies with local code and maintains a safe and efficient work
environment. Complete wellhead modifications. Complete system plumbing and inter panel communication wiring. Perform prestart
diagnostics and make necessary corrections. Provide initial startup service and correct any automation or mechanical issues.
Provide training to client on system specifics, limitations, and demands.
Performance Obstacles: Many factors impeding the timely completion of the activities had to be addressed and
overcome. City permitting and inspection for electrical, building code, plumbing, and sanitary sewer issues were handled by our
client at various stages of the project. Alliance provided specific information and working knowledge of the city permitting process
to expedite our client efforts. Sourcing, securing, and supervising subcontractors on a time sensitive project often provides
significant challenges. Alliance has vast experience performing system installations across the state. As a result we have found
the reasonable and professional subcontractors we have come to rely on in almost every region of the state. The layout of the site
and its status as an active business meant that our presence was a definite distraction to the site operations. Our crew chief
worked closely with the tenant to decide on an agreeable course of action that minimized impact to his operation and our schedule.
Alliance worked nights and weekends during the trenching phase of construction in the high traffic areas to offset the burden.
Results: The system was installed on time, within budget, and with no change orders. The system startup was
successful. It was reported that within 72 hours the entire site realized six feet of effective ground water depression.
Findings: Communication and coordination combined with experience and willpower came together to produce real and
immediate results.
