Case Study 1

Case Study:  Multiple Contaminate Water Restoration in a Remote Location

General Location:  Far West Aleutian Chain, Adak Island, Alaska

Client Type:  Large International Environmental and Engineering Consulting Firm

End User Type:  Federal Government

Climatic and Site Conditions:  Temperate rain forest, tundra flora, summer winds frequently in excess of 60 mph, winter winds frequently in excess of 90 mph, generally cloudy and/or foggy.

Project Goals:  Produce and deliver a project specific mobile water treatment unit. Travel to Adak to provide startup assistance and two weeks training to equipment operators. Provide remote technical support as needed. Comply with discharge standards. Design and incorporate additional system components and parts for multiple contingencies. Maintain discharge stream ranges for multiple parameters

Project Specification:  Failsafe system design with redundant alarms for critical function over range protection. Treat water to the following: Turbidity to less than 5 NTU above background, No measurable settleable solids, Total aqueous hydrocarbons to less than 15 ug/l, Total aromatic hydrocarbons to less than 10 ug/l, pH to within 0.2 units of receiving waters, total iron from 5-141 mg/l to less than 2 mg/l, LNAPL to no visible sheen.

Technology Selected:  Enclosed heated trailer construction for mobility, Influent feed pump, Oil water separator, batch process transfer tank, 1,000 pound manual backflush sand filter, series-parallel configuration virgin coconut granular activated carbon, custom builtsoluble iron reaction and removal vessel, mechanical filtration.

Implementation of Technology:  The specifications were submitted, scrutinized, revised, resubmitted, revised, and approved prior to issuance of notification to proceed. Project review periods severely limited production time remaining in schedule. Coordinated efforts were made by all parties involved; resulting in the timely completion and delivery of the equipment and materials to the shipping terminal. Alliance personnel met the equipment and the consultant onsite and completed the setup and training of the operators with time to spare.

Results:  Alliance Maintenance and Services, Inc. met or exceeded all of the project specifications, and complied with all timeline and budgets constraints. The role of Alliance was absolutely critical to the completion of the project as a whole. The training provided to the client and the preparation and planning of the equipment package resulted in flawless and simple operation and increased available manpower to other phases of operation.

Findings:  Alliance is capable, experienced, and well suited to deliver critical custom built solutions to water quality and treatment issues in normal and extreme operating environments.
